Twilight just ain’t right

Anna: “This is a public service announcement. Other than the fact that it’s terrible on all absolute levels, the Twilight series is also terrible on all moral levels. Glittery vamp idiot Edward is a creep. He’s a, wait, 100-year-old+vampire going after a teen? Doesn’t anyone see anything wrong with that? And then he, still freaking old as dirt, marries said teen and then knocks her up, what, the first night they have sex? DOES ANYONE SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THESE NOVELS???? It doesn’t matter if he looks young, he isn’t young. That excuse doesn’t work in, what I like to call, reality. It shouldn’t work in a novel that millions upon millions of people enjoy and treat like their bible, to my detriment. Why are we ignoring this fact of age? WHY? Is it because it isn’t real? If we could spend so much time judging and restricting what video games kids play and what music they listen to because of what people consider ‘questionable content,’ then why isn’t there a public outcry about the fact that this is CLEARLY AN OLD DUDE TRYING TO AND SUCCESSFULLY GETTING INTO A TEENAGER’S PANTS?  ’To Catch a Predator’ wasn’t a television series for no reason, people.”

Editor’s Note: I, Anna, understand there is the age of consent, and 17 is such in most states, therefore I deleted my assertion of pedophilia. However, the entire series is creepy and morally-questionable considering Bella is 16-years-old when the series starts. The fact remains, just as in the real world, sex and love is not about how old a person looks–it’s about their maturity and their ability to handle an all-consuming physical and emotional relationship. Is the idea of love the same for a human 16-year-old as it is for a 100-year-old vampire? No, it isn’t. Just as it isn’t the same for a 60-year-old man and 16-year-old girl. If we aren’t OK with the idea of sexualizing young girls and boys, from 5-years-old to 16-years-old, then we shouldn’t be OK with promoting a relationship between a 100-year-old and 16-year-old. But I suppose it’s all a matter of your own morality. I just know I’m not OK with any girl getting it on with someone born two years before the Ford Motor Company was founded. And who probably partied with Charlie Chaplin.
